KAZAKHSTAN BECAME GRECO’S 50TH MEMBER STATE

On 1 January 2020, Kazakhstan became GRECO’s 50th member state. As result, GRECO’s membership now spans over three continents - Europe, America and Asia-, covering a population close to 1,2 billion people.

GRECO is the Council of Europe anti-corruption body in charge of ensuring compliance with and effective implementation of the Organisation’s anti-corruption standards. It helps states to identify deficiencies in national anti-corruption policies, prompting the necessary legislative, institutional and practical reforms.

First of all, joining GRECO will allow the experts of the Council of Europe to regularly monitor anti-corruption legislation and the anti-corruption policy in the country with a view to compliance with best international practices and international legal acts. Based on the results of each round of monitoring, the country will be given recommendations on changing legislation or taking organizational measures to increase the effectiveness of anti-corruption measures.

GRECO member states now comprise the 47 Council of Europe member states, Belarus, Kazakhstan and the United States of America.
