PUBLISHED CORRUPTION PERCEPTION INDEX 2019 FROM TRANSPARANCY INTERNATIONAL

The Corruption Perceptions Index ranks 180 countries and territories by their perceived levels of public sector corruption, according to experts and business people.

 

Some of highlight of Corruption Perceptions Index 2019.

- Countries whose score changed significantly between 2012 and 2019:

  1. a) improvers - Greece, Guyana, Estonia;
  2. b) decliners - Canada, Nicaragua, Australia.

- Corruption Perceptions Index 2019 reveals that a majority of countries are showing little to no improvement in tackling corruption.

- Countries that perform well on the Perceptions Index 2019 have broader consultation in policy decisions.

- Corruption Perceptions Index 2019 shows corruption is more pervasive in countries where big money can flow freely into electoral campaigns and where governments listen only to the voices of wealthy or well-connected individuals. On the other hand countries that perform well on the Corruption Perceptions Index have strong enforcement of campaign finance regulations.

In response to the results of the Corruption Perception Index 2019 by Transparency International Chairman Dahl Ferreira Rubio: “Governments must urgently address the corrupt role of big money in financing political parties and the excessive influence they have on our political systems.”

To end corruption and restore trust in politics, it is imperative to prevent opportunities for political corruption and to foster the integrity of political systems. Transparency International recommends: 

- Manage conflicts of interest.

- Control political financing.

- Strengthen electoral integrity.

- Regulate lobbying activities.

- Empower citizens.

- Tackle preferential treatment.

- Reinforce checks and balances.
